Fostering

Could you welcome an animal in need into your home?

Becoming a foster carer is a unique volunteer role which involves providing a loving home environment for an animal during their time of need. It is one of the most vital volunteer roles and is also an incredibly rewarding experience.

We recruit fosterers for two reasons; animals that we are rehoming who prefer a home environment to the kennels or cattery, and for our A Helping Paw pet fostering service to help owners who are homeless or fleeing domestic abuse.

  • No vet bills
  • No pet food costs
  • All equipment is provided for by Oak Tree
  • We provide support, help and advice

What will I be doing?

  • Providing home care, feeding and caring for them, writing detailed notes on their progress and feeding information to the animal’s caseworker.
  • Following set training and exercise plans.
  • Taking your foster animals to receive veterinary care as needed and administering any treatment as advised by the vet, with appropriate training and supported by the animal's caseworker.

What attributes are you looking for?

  • Experience of caring and training using positive reinforcement techniques.
  • Comfortable giving medication to animals under the direction of a vet and with appropriate training.
  • Good attention to detail and ability to keep an animal information log.
  • Ability to follow behavioural assessment tasks and training plans.
  • Willingness to take on a challenge and work with animals who have specific training needs.
  • Ability to handle strong and large animals (where required)

Time commitment: Minimum of 7 days over a fixed period (24 hour animal care)

Location: Due to its nature this role is home-based, however, transport may be needed to our partner vets and Oak Tree Farm (Wetheral). Own transport is beneficial due to our location (we are currently not in a position to be able to offer transport).

All fosterers are home-checked and receive ongoing training and support from our welfare team. Training and support will be provided for this role as appropriate.
