Description

Meet Curly Wurly, our 14 year old cob mare with a stunning moustache!

When Curly arrived at Oak Tree she was extremely nervous of people. She has now grown in confidence and is easy for both staff and volunteers to catch and lead. She still has a long way to go but is making steady improvements through the use of positive reinforcement.

Curly enjoys a groom, is good to have her feet picked out and stands for the farrier, however, she does not like having her feathers brushed. This is something we will continue to work on before she is rehomed as well as building up her confidence with the vet. She is very easy going and is happy to live with mares, geldings, or a mixed herd! She can be stabled if needed but is also fine to live out 24/7, however, she would need restricted grazing during the summer months to prevent obesity.

This September Curly was assessed to become a ridden pony. Curly proved very willing, easy to lunge, long rein and ride both alone and in company. Curly is great in traffic including tankers, cars and cyclists. She is good in open spaces and does enjoy an occasional canter!

Curly would be best suited to a home where she can be a companion or light hack for a small adult. She is an older mare and enjoys a leisurely lifestyle with minimal fuss!

Any potential adopters must be willing to continue using positive reinforcement training with Curly to help her build up confidence in her new home.

Updates

September: Curly is currently undergoing assessment to become a light hack. She is taking everything in her stride and so far proven safe and willing in both open spaces and on the road.

November: Curly now hacks out a couple times a week around our local village and bridleways. She is good to hack alone and equally ok in company.

WE HAVE MORE HORSES AND PONIES IN NEED

On average, we have 400 animals come into our shelter every year. Please take a look at some of our horses and ponies looking for loving homes and see if you can find a friend for life. Where appropriate, all of our animals are vaccinated, microchipped and neutered. We also give each animal a behavioural assessment to identify their needs and help you find your perfect companion.
